ERIE, Pa., May 9, 2012 /PRNewswire/ — In June 1983, the Beach Boys were the first act to play Erie’s newly opened Louis J. Tullio Arena. Since that time, the arena has hosted a diverse array of musical acts and sporting events from Kenny Rogers and the Beastie Boys to the Erie Bayhawks and Erie Otters.

Today, nearly 30 years after opening, the arena is undergoing a $42 million dollar renovation and expansion that will be completed in the fall 2013. The renovation will add 2000 seats, 13 suites, a club level, and many other amenities only found in major market venues. The newly renovated center will reopen under a new name, Erie Insurance Arena.
“Erie Insurance has supported this community since it opened its doors 87 years ago,” said Roger Richards, chairperson, Strategic Planning Committee, Erie County Convention Center Authority Board of Directors. “They are the perfect partner for us, and we look forward to continuing to provide our visitors with world-class entertainment and sports at the newly minted Erie Insurance Arena.”
Earlier this year, the Erie County Convention Center Authority reached out to Erie Insurance for a significant contribution to complete the renovation. Erie Insurance will contribute $3 million paid in annual installments spread over a 10-year period.
“This is about two Erie-based organizations making a long-term commitment to the city,” said ERIE President and CEO Terrence W. Cavanaugh. “We are committed to supporting a thriving downtown Erie and want to ensure the facility remains a vital part of the city.”
In honor of former Erie Mayor Louis J. Tullio, a driving force behind the arena’s construction, Erie’s entertainment and cultural district will be named Louis J. Tullio Plaza.
“My father spent his life making Erie a city of which we could all be proud,” said June Tullio Pintea, daughter of the late Louis Tullio. “He would be extremely satisfied to know that the Erie County Convention Center Authority and Erie Insurance continue to ensure that our city can provide family-friendly, top-quality entertainment.”

This is a preview of a project I am currently working on.
I go for walks almost everyday, passing people who glance at building sides and grass lawns desperate to avoid eye contact. I’ve always loved meeting new people. Everyone has a story to tell. From smartphones to ipods, our society seems to be pushing this idea of living in a personal bubble instead of engaging those around us. This project has helped me meet these people I pass every day, from a painter recovering from alcohol addiction to a man who once ran for mayor, only to lose by less than 200 votes.
I decided to keep these faces anonymous to strike up curiosity in you. The goal is simple. Go meet a stranger. Connect with your neighbors again. We all live by hundreds or even thousands of other people.
Stop pretending to text someone and just say hi.
Three more elementary schools closing in Erie…
…and the violent crimes in the city continue to rise. Kids going to Millcreek schools or Fairview or Harborcreek, you’re going to be all right, but if you live in the city and can’t afford private school? Well, good luck to you, the Erie School Board says.
Yet, we hear the same old excuses. It will save $4 million annually. It will make the district “stronger” (what does that even mean?) and more “equitable” (how?) and “will stabilize class sizes across the district at about 26 students” (that’s too many for an effective elementary classroom… we are going the wrong way) and “will allow the middle schools to offer a wider array of classes and programs” (these are just words without an ounce of truth behind them).
Erie is in big trouble. And we are sitting around and letting it happen.
Good for Blake Ahearn. He was a lot of fun to watch when he played for the Bayhawks for those two seasons. I’m glad he’s getting his shot in the NBA.
Former Bayhawk Ivan Johnson also continues to impress now that he is with the Atlanta Hawks, but just like when he was with the Bayhawks, his bad attitude keeps getting in the way of his ability. Recently, he was sent home and missed an important game against Orlando and fined for conduct detrimental to the team resulting from a verbal altercation on the bench. As I said when he played for Erie, he has so much talent, but it’s his attitude that is getting in the way of his reaching his potential.
